The Agora Bone Well

Neonatal Mortality and Alternative Burial in Hellenistic Athens

par la Prof. Susan I. ROTROFF
Jarvis Thurston and Mona Van Duyn Professor Emerita – Washington University in Saint Louis

A 2nd-century BC well just outside the Athenian Agora contained the bones of over 450 new-born infants along with a few other individuals, 150 dogs, and household and workshop waste. This lecture offers an explanation of how this varied material came to rest in the well, contributing to our understanding of birth, death, and burial practices in Hellenistic Athens.
